Actionable Steps for Clinical Improvement in Cleft Care from the 2025 Holistic Outcomes Task Force
This webpage contains measures and resources for cleft lip and palate care training. The content was developed by the 2025 Holistic Outcomes Task Force. The 2025 Holistic Outcomes Task Force was established in 2024 and met virtually through Sept 2025. Task Force members spanned diverse geographic regions (Americas, Europe, Western Pacific, South-East Africa) and consisted of cleft lip and palate care specialists and researchers. Clinicians can leverage these resources and methods to drive internal quality improvement in key nutrition/growth, psychosocial risk, and surgical outcomes domains.
Task Force Goals
1. Address barriers to dissemination of 2022 Task Force measures/resources for training and facilitate dissemination of this information.
2. Update and expand the 2022 Task Force outcome/assessment measure list and psychosocial training materials.
Methods
The Task Force engaged a research librarian who conducted literature searches regarding outcome measures and psychosocial trainings published within the past 10 years. The subcommittees reviewed abstracts and articles to identify measures and/or trainings that were appropriate to include (e.g., based on psychometrics). We then created an updated list of measures that includes cleft and craniofacial specific instruments along with recommendations for instruments that assess general psychosocial functioning which can be used within cleft/craniofacial populations (e.g., for comparison to normative samples). The measure list was expanded to include instruments appropriate across the lifespan and for non-cleft craniofacial conditions. The psychosocial resource list includes international programs, non-profits, and other resources that can be used to support psychosocial well-being, cleft provider training regarding psychosocial needs, and family education and support.
